All seems well between Nigerian music giants Wizkid and Don Jazzy. In a recent tweet, Wizkid praised Don Jazzy, referring to him as an “amazing human,” effectively dispelling rumors of any tension between them.
The speculation about a rift began when Wizkid responded to a comment from Mavin Records signee Ladipoe. Ladipoe had suggested that Afrobeats stars were experiencing their own “Afrobeats is dead era,” similar to the “hip hop is dead era” previously endured by Nigerian hip hop artists. This came after Wizkid’s controversial statement that “hip hop was dead,” which had already sparked criticism and diss tracks from Nigerian rappers Oladips and Zila Oaks.
When fans drew Wizkid’s attention to Ladipoe’s comment during an online session, Wizkid remarked that he couldn’t engage a rapper signed to an “influencer,” a comment perceived by many as a slight towards Don Jazzy, the head of Mavin Records.
However, Wizkid’s recent tweet praising Don Jazzy cleared the air, showing there was no bad blood between them. Don Jazzy also appeared unbothered by the “influencer” comment, as he did not react negatively. In fact, he thanked Wizkid on social media after Wizkid shared the streaming link to Mavin signee Ayra Starr’s sophomore album, “The Year I Turned 21.”
This mutual respect and support highlight the camaraderie within the Nigerian music industry, proving that any perceived rifts are often just misunderstandings.
