Tyla Outshines Tems, Ayra Starr, and Davido to Claim Best Afrobeats at 2024 VMAs

South African pop sensation Tyla took home the prestigious Best Afrobeats award at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), marking a significant moment in her career. In a highly competitive category, Tyla’s global hit Water triumphed over heavyweight contenders such as Ayra Starr’s Last Heartbreak Song, Chris Brown’s Sensational featuring Lojay and Davido, Usher’s Ruin featuring Pheelz, and Tems’ Love Me Jeje.

The 2024 VMAs, held on September 11 at the UBS Arena in New York, was a star-studded affair with Taylor Swift leading the pack with 12 nominations and bagging 7 awards, the highest win of the night. Despite Swift’s dominance, it was Tyla’s moment to shine as she continued her meteoric rise in the Afrobeats scene with Water, a song that has taken over charts and dance floors across the globe.

Tyla’s Water has been a game-changer, earning her widespread recognition and accolades. The track has dominated the award circuit, winning Best African Song Performance at the 66th Grammys, a major achievement that solidified her place as one of the leading voices of African music on the global stage. Her infectious blend of Afrobeats, pop, and Amapiano has resonated with listeners worldwide, making her a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

The Best Afrobeats category at the 2024 VMAs was hotly contested, with nominees representing the best of what African and global Afrobeats talent has to offer. Tems, Ayra Starr, Davido, and Lojay have all had a phenomenal year, with their music making waves internationally. Still, it was Tyla’s Water that captivated fans and critics alike, earning her the top spot.

The victory marks another major milestone in Tyla’s career as she continues to break barriers and elevate Afrobeats to new heights. Her VMA win is a testament to her growing influence and the global reach of African music.
