“The Devil Told Me to Jump”: Chidinma Ekile Recounts Spiritual Battle and Near-Death Experience

Nigerian gospel singer Chidinma Ekile has opened up about a harrowing spiritual encounter that nearly claimed her life during an intense prayer retreat.

In a heartfelt testimony, the singer, who rose to fame as a secular artist before transitioning into gospel music, shared how she battled a dark, suicidal voice that urged her to jump off a cliff in the dead of night.

“The devil took me to the top of the mountain, to the cliff at night, where everything was dark. And right there at the cliff, the devil asked me to jump,” Chidinma recounted. “The voice was so strong. The enemy had seen what the Lord was about to do and said he needed to abort the mission now.”

Chidinma revealed that she was on a spiritual retreat when the traumatic experience occurred. The singer said she had embarked on the journey seeking a deeper connection with God through prayer and fasting. But in the middle of her spiritual pursuit, she found herself confronted with what she described as the enemy’s desperate attempt to derail her purpose.

“I was about to take the jump, and I noticed I was being barricaded, and I couldn’t jump. Something was just there, and I was crying. Somehow, my spiritual mum came to get me out. I could have lost my life, but God had mercy,” she said.

Chidinma went on to describe her retreat as physically and emotionally demanding. After returning from the U.S., she headed straight to the wilderness, where she prayed, fasted, and sought divine direction.

“I went to the mountain. I’m not Jesus, but I fasted and prayed for over forty days. I lost weight. The experience was something I never imagined. I came from America and went straight to the bush. I slept on one side till I finished. I cried, I sang, I prayed, and God came to me and spoke to me. It was so real. I never knew He loved me this much.”

Her story is a reminder of the unseen battles many people face, even during their most sacred moments. For Chidinma, it was also a moment of divine encounter, one that strengthened her resolve to stay on the path of faith and purpose.

Since leaving the secular music scene, Chidinma has become a strong voice in Nigeria’s gospel community, using her story and music to inspire hope and healing.
