Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone emergency abdominal surgery following a frightening collision with the goalpost during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Leicester City at the City Ground.
The 27-year-old Nigerian international had only just come on as a substitute in the 83rd minute when he attempted to connect with a cross from Anthony Elanga. In the process, he collided heavily with the post while under pressure from Leicester’s Facundo Buonanotte.
Despite receiving prolonged on-pitch treatment, Awoniyi tried to continue playing, but it was clear he wasn’t moving freely. Medical examinations the following day revealed the severity of the abdominal injury, prompting urgent surgical intervention.
In an official statement, Nottingham Forest confirmed the development:
“The club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City. Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo.”
The incident also sparked post-match controversy, with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis storming the pitch in frustration over how the injury was handled by the club’s medical team. He later explained his reaction in an Instagram post:
“Everybody — coaching staff, players, supporters and including myself — we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff’s misjudgement on his ability to continue the game. This is natural, this is a demonstration of the passion we feel for our club.”
Awoniyi’s absence comes at a crucial time for Forest. The club, despite being assured of a top-seven finish and a return to European football, is still chasing an elusive Champions League spot. Sunday’s draw against already-relegated Leicester saw them lose control of their top-four destiny.
With two matches left, including a high-stakes final day fixture against Chelsea, Forest must win both and hope rivals Aston Villa, Manchester City, or Newcastle drop points for a Champions League dream to become reality.
Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, has been a vital presence up front when fit. His injury will undoubtedly be a blow to both club and country, with the Super Eagles likely monitoring his recovery closely.
Forest has not yet released a timeline for his return but promised further updates in due course.
