“Stop Calling Us ‘Ogechi Boys’ – We’re Not a Group,” Brown Joel Tells Fans

Fast-rising Nigerian artist Brown Joel has made it clear: he, Hyce, and Boypee are not a music group.

During a recent interview on Trending with Hip TV, the singer addressed the growing label of “Ogechi Boys” – a name fans coined after the trio’s viral hit ‘Ogechi’, and its chart-topping remix with Davido.

“It’s not our fault that Nigerians discovered us through one song. We’re not a group. We’re friends who happen to be individual artists. There’s no contract binding us together,” Brown Joel said.

Despite their repeated collaborations, including follow-up track ‘Constantly’ and a joint feature on Chief Priest’s debut single ‘More Money’, Brown Joel insists the trio’s identity remains separate.

While fans continue to lump them together as a group, largely due to their breakout success, Brown Joel is pushing back on the narrative in hopes of reestablishing his identity as a solo act.

His frustration is understandable. Long before ‘Ogechi’ exploded, Brown Joel had already been carving a lane for himself. In 2022, his song ‘Peace’ gained notable traction and introduced him to a wider audience.

Still, changing public perception may prove difficult, especially when ‘Ogechi’ remains their most recognizable hit.

Whether or not the “Ogechi Boys” tag sticks, Brown Joel is determined to remind fans that his artistry extends far beyond one viral moment.
