Remembering Onyeka Onwenu: The Life and Legacy of Nigeria’s Elegant Stallion.

Onyeka Onwenu, often referred to as “The Elegant Stallion,” was a trailblazing Nigerian singer, actress, and politician whose influence spanned several decades. Born on May 17, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, she pursued her education in the United States, earning a BA in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College and a master’s degree in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research in New York.

Onwenu’s multifaceted career began in broadcasting, where she worked as a tour guide at the United Nations before returning to Nigeria. She joined the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), where she made a significant impact as a reporter. Her 1984 documentary, “Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches,” garnered international acclaim for its incisive critique of corruption and environmental issues in the Niger Delta.

In the music industry, Onwenu’s journey started in 1981 with her debut album, “For the Love of You.” She released several successful albums, including “Endless Life” and “One Love.” Her collaborations with Sunny Ade, particularly the songs “Choices” and “Wait for Me,” which promoted family planning, showcased her commitment to social issues. Transitioning to gospel music in the 1990s, she continued to address themes such as health, peace, and women’s rights through her songs.

Onwenu’s activism extended beyond her music. In 2000, she staged a hunger strike to protest NTA’s refusal to pay royalties for using her song “Iyogogo.” Her protest drew significant attention and support, highlighting her dedication to artists’ rights and the struggles within the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Her acting career was equally distinguished. She won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in “Widow’s Cult” and received a nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Rising Moon.” She also starred in notable films like “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Lionheart.”

Onwenu’s foray into politics saw her serve as the Executive Director of the National Centre for Women Development, appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013. Her political career was driven by her desire to effect change, particularly in areas concerning women’s rights and cultural development.

Throughout her life, Onyeka Onwenu received numerous awards and honors. She was named Nigerian Woman of Distinction and was a recipient of the national award of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR). Her autobiography, “My Father’s Daughter,” released in 2020, provided an intimate look at her life and career, cementing her legacy as a formidable force in Nigerian culture and society.

Onyeka Onwenu’s impact on Nigerian music, film, and activism is profound, and her contributions have left an indelible mark on the nation’s cultural landscape.
