In an inspiring move rooted in heritage and identity, Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu has officially switched international allegiance from Germany to Nigeria, expressing his deep desire to connect with his Nigerian roots.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in London, the 25-year-old full-back, who is part of the Super Eagles squad for the Unity Cup, shared his excitement about donning the green and white jersey for the first time. “It’s a great feeling,” Agu said, visibly elated. “Representing Nigeria is something I’ve always wanted – not just for football but to reconnect with my roots.”
FIFA Clearance and New Beginnings
Agu’s switch became official after FIFA cleared him to play for Nigeria, following a confirmation from the German Football Federation that he had never played an official match for Germany at senior or junior levels. His only appearances were in two friendly matches for the German U21 side back in 2019.
Now officially a Super Eagle, Agu is laser-focused on helping the team succeed. “I want to contribute to the growth of the team and hopefully win trophies with Nigeria,” he said.
Football, Culture, and Pride
Born to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Agu has always had strong ties to his African heritage. His admiration for Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha played a big role in his football journey. “I look up to him,” Agu said. “He’s one of the reasons I fell in love with the game.”
But Agu’s connection to Nigeria runs deeper than football. He’s a huge fan of Nigerian music, regularly vibing to tracks by Burna Boy, Omah Lay, and Davido. And when it comes to food? “Jollof rice and plantain – that’s my favourite,” he said with a smile.
Impressive Bundesliga Form
Agu’s call-up is backed by solid club form. In the 2024/2025 Bundesliga season, he made 22 appearances and scored 3 goals for Werder Bremen, showcasing his versatility, pace, and defensive strength. Analysts believe he could be a key asset in fortifying Nigeria’s backline.
Unity Cup and Ghana Rivalry
As the Super Eagles gear up for the Unity Cup clash against Ghana, Agu knows the stakes are high. “It’s more than just a friendly – it’s a rivalry,” he stated. “We’ve trained well, the team spirit is amazing, and I’m looking forward to a great performance.”
After just two training sessions with the squad, Agu has already felt the warmth and camaraderie among the players. “The welcome has been incredible. It feels like home.”
A New Chapter for the Super Eagles
Felix Agu’s inclusion in the Super Eagles isn’t just a tactical addition – it’s a story of identity, connection, and pride. As Nigeria looks to rebuild and aim for continental glory, players like Agu bring not just talent, but heart.
With his boots laced, roots embraced, and pride unshaken, Agu is ready to soar with the Eagles. And fans across Nigeria will be watching, cheering, and hoping that this chapter brings new glory days.
