Veteran Nollywood actor Ibrahim Chatta has made it clear: the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) simply don’t interest him.
In a candid conversation on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, recorded before the 2025 edition of the awards, Chatta spoke frankly about his indifference toward one of the industry’s most prestigious events.
“I’m not interested. I’m not interested at all,” he said when asked about the awards. He explained that he wouldn’t even bother praying to win something he doesn’t care about, especially when he wasn’t invited to the show.
“What would I pray for something that I’m not interested in? They didn’t invite me,” he added.
According to the celebrated actor, he didn’t submit any film for nomination, so he understands why he wasn’t considered. But beyond that, he questioned the relevance of being part of a space he hasn’t actively engaged with.
“Whenever I am interested in going to the AMVCA, I’ll make a film and submit that film so that I can be rated and they can check to see if I deserve the award or not,” he explained. “But I’ve not given them any film to nominate me for.”
He also expressed some curiosity about why he’s never been invited, especially when he sees younger actors being recognized. He believes it could be due to his low profile outside of film.
“Maybe it’s because I’m not a very social person,” he said. “Apart from that, do you even know how many awards are sitting in my home?”
Chatta revealed that he has received accolades from prominent figures, including Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, and fellow actor Odunlade Adekola, among others. Yet, he doesn’t feel the need to showcase every recognition he gets.
“We get awards, but we just don’t post.”
With or without the AMVCA spotlight, Ibrahim Chatta is clearly secure in his legacy, one built on years of consistent, respected work in Nollywood.
