Legendary Nigerian producer and music executive ID Cabasa has shared the inspiration behind his upcoming album and it all started with a conversation with Olamide about the identity of Afrobeats.
Appearing on a recent episode of Rubbing Minds, Cabasa revealed that his new body of work will reimagine classic Nigerian songs, aiming to preserve and spotlight the sounds that helped shape what Afrobeats is today.
“Olamide mentioned that we should probably bring back some of the sounds that shaped Afrobeats, and it resonated with what I was planning to do,” Cabasa said.
The veteran producer, who played a crucial role in the rise of stars like 9ice, explained that his mission is rooted in cultural preservation. He believes there’s a gap, or “lacuna”, in Afrobeats’ documented history, and he’s on a mission to close it.
In the interview, Cabasa also addressed Akon’s recent claim during a U.S. talk show appearance that he helped discover Wizkid and played a central role in taking Afrobeats global.
While acknowledging Akon’s contributions, Cabasa set the record straight:
“Akon played his part, but Afrobeats was already thriving. Many stars had already laid the foundation before the global explosion.”
He added that the success of Nigerian mainstream music is the result of collective efforts across generations, from pioneers to present-day hitmakers.
Cabasa also touched on the idea of gatekeeping in Afrobeats. According to him, while creativity should remain open and free-flowing, Nigerians must remain at the forefront of Afrobeats conversations globally.
“The sound can evolve, but the roots should always be recognized and respected,” he stated.
To bring this vision to life, Cabasa has already released some reimagined classics, including a new version of 9ice’s ‘Photocopy’ and a refreshed take on Styl-Plus’ iconic love anthem ‘Olufunmi’.
Through this upcoming project, ID Cabasa is not only celebrating the golden era of Nigerian music, he’s also inviting a new generation of listeners to connect with its legacy.
