ICYMI: Tacha Criticizes Ayra Starr, Tems, and Burna Boy’s Met Gala Looks — “This Is Coming from Love”

Reality TV star and media personality Tacha Akide is once again at the center of online buzz, this time for her blunt critique of Nigerian celebrities’ fashion choices at the 2025 Met Gala.

In a now-viral video posted on her social media, Tacha didn’t hold back as she expressed disappointment in the red carpet looks served by Tems, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy, all of whom made history this year by becoming part of the first wave of Afrobeats stars to attend the prestigious fashion event.

“I think someone had to say it. So the Nigerians at the Met Gala did not represent, and this is coming from a place of love,” she began. “You know I love Ayra Starr and Tems, and I’m crazy about Burna Boy, but trust me, they didn’t represent at all.”

Tacha Breaks Down the Looks

Starting with Tems, she criticized the singer’s outfit, designed by British-Ghanaian designer Oswald Boateng, for lacking impact.

“Girl, I get that the outfit was Oswald Boateng, but it’s very clear you weren’t their first choice. I don’t understand the outfit at all. Haven’t you heard of Veekee James or Swanky Jerry? They would have brought the moon down with pure creativity.”

She then addressed Ayra Starr’s appearance, calling it underwhelming and rushed.

“Ayra, you’re the future of Afrobeats. You cannot be wearing that to the Met Gala. It’s giving last minute. It’s giving ‘you weren’t informed.’ That look is giving Mary Amaka. Please don’t do it again.”

As for Burna Boy, who’s known for making bold fashion statements, she expressed surprise.

“Burna Boy, you always kill the red carpet, what happened? You never miss, but this time you did. You know we love you, but next time come correct.”

Tacha concluded with a bold comparison:

“Let’s not lie, even Priscilla’s wedding gave us better looks. Nigerians are known for music and also fashion. I love my people, but someone had to say it.”

Mixed Reactions from Fans and Fashion Enthusiasts

Unsurprisingly, Tacha’s blunt commentary sparked a wave of backlash, with many social media users taking time to school her on how the Met Gala works.

One user wrote:

“The designers buy tables and invite celebs. They dress them to showcase their designs. You should have asked questions before whipping out your camera.”

Another commented:

“It’s $75,000 per ticket. Do you think Veekee James can pay that just to have Ayra Starr wear her piece at the Met Gala?”

Others accused Tacha of being uninformed, with one post stating:

“You’re good at editing videos, but beyond that, there’s not much upstairs.”

While some agreed with her take on the fashion underwhelming Nigerians at the gala, the general consensus was that her delivery, though passionate, lacked an understanding of the bigger picture, including the Met Gala’s invite-only structure and designer sponsorship dynamics.

Still, one thing is certain: Tacha has once again stirred a necessary conversation about representation, standards, and expectations for Nigerian celebrities on global stages.
