What a difference a year makes.
Just 12 months ago, Southampton were celebrating a triumphant return to the Premier League after an unforgettable playoff win over Leeds at Wembley. Fast forward to April 2025, and the mood couldn’t be more different. The Saints have officially been relegated—and not just relegated, but with seven games still to play. That’s a first in Premier League history.
The writing had been on the wall for weeks, maybe even months. Their 3-1 defeat to Tottenham sealed the deal, marking their 25th loss of the season. And while the drop back to the Championship is already hard to stomach, what’s worse is that Southampton could still break several unwanted Premier League records before the season ends on May 25.
Let’s take a look at the not-so-proud history the Saints are in danger of making.
1. Lowest Points Total Ever?
Remember Derby County’s infamous 11-point season in 2007/08? Yeah, Southampton are knocking on that door. They currently sit on 10 points, and while projections say they might just scrape 13, it’s going to be uncomfortably close.
2. A Fortress No More: St Mary’s Stats Are Grim
Southampton have earned just five points at home this season. That’s one win, two draws, and a whopping 12 defeats. With four home games left, they’re close to breaking the record for fewest home points (7, held by Sunderland).
And while they can’t go lower than one home win (they beat Everton in November), they can still match that record. Talk about a fall from grace.
3. Most Defeats in a 38-Game Season?
Sunderland, Derby, and Sheffield United all hold the record with 29 defeats in a single campaign. The Saints are already on 25 losses. With seven games left, this record is very much in danger.
4. Most Home Losses Too?
Watford lost 15 times at home in 2021/22. Southampton? They’ve lost 12 and still have four more games at St Mary’s. You do the math.
5. Worst Goal Difference Incoming?
Currently at -51, Southampton could be heading toward Derby and Sheffield United’s joint record of -69. With Manchester City, Arsenal, and Aston Villa still to play, it’s a real possibility.
6. That Winless Run…
While Derby still hold the record for the longest winless streak (32 games), Southampton’s 22-game stretch without a win between March 2023 and November 2024 is the third-longest in Premier League history. Not exactly something fans will want to remember.
What’s Left on the Fixture List?
Southampton still have to face:
- Aston Villa (H)
- West Ham (A)
- Fulham (H)
- Leicester (A)
- Manchester City (H)
- Everton (A)
- Arsenal (H)
That’s a tough run-in, especially with confidence at rock-bottom and relegation already confirmed. Still, there’s some pride to play for—and maybe a chance to avoid the worst-ever tag.
Final Whistle: Where Do They Go From Here?
This season has been brutal, no doubt. But while the stats paint a painful picture, they don’t tell the full story. Southampton remain a proud club with a strong academy, a loyal fanbase, and a recent history of bouncing back.
The Championship will be a fresh start, and perhaps a chance to rebuild the club’s identity. But for now, fans are left watching and hoping the season ends with at least a few positive notes.
Because the only thing worse than relegation… is going down in the record books for all the wrong reasons.
