Nigerian rapper Erigga has publicly declared Phyno as the greatest rapper Nigeria has ever produced, praising his longevity and consistency in a genre that has seen many come and go.
In a recent interview with Echoo Room, the Warri-born rapper opened up about his admiration for the Igbo rap icon, especially after the release of their new collaboration, Up Iweka, a song Erigga described as the result of long-standing mutual respect and conversations between the two artists.
“I have always wanted to do a song with Phyno. We’ve had that conversation for years,” Erigga said. “He would always say it’s up to me. He’s just that kind of person.”
Known for being selective with features, Erigga explained that he only collaborates when there’s true chemistry. For him, Phyno represents not just skill but longevity and adaptability.
“Phyno has been in the game and lived through different times. He is still relevant. He’s the GOAT, the greatest Nigerian rapper because he stayed consistent through it all,” Erigga emphasized.
Phyno, born Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, has enjoyed an illustrious career built on his unique fusion of indigenous Igbo rap with mainstream appeal. From hit albums like No Guts No Glory to anthems like Fada Fada and Connect, he has cemented his legacy as a cultural force in Nigerian hip-hop.
Erigga’s endorsement adds to the ongoing debate among fans and critics about who truly deserves the “Greatest of All Time” title in Nigerian rap, a list that often includes the likes of M.I Abaga, Olamide, Mode 9, and Vector.
Whether or not you agree with Erigga, one thing is certain, Phyno’s impact on Nigerian music is undeniable, and he continues to earn respect across generations.
