Do2dtun Calls Out Whitemoney Over Ethnic Comment During Headies Acceptance Speech

Nigerian media personality Do2dtun has publicly criticized BBNaija star-turned-singer Whitemoney over remarks he made during the 2025 Headies Awards, describing them as “unnecessary” and potentially divisive.

During the ceremony held on April 27, 2025, Whitemoney took the stage to receive an award on behalf of highlife singer Flavour, who was absent. In his acceptance speech, Whitemoney said, “On behalf of the Igbos,” a comment that immediately sparked mixed reactions online.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) the following day, Do2dtun expressed disapproval of Whitemoney’s wording, arguing that it framed an Afrobeats achievement in ethnic terms rather than celebrating a broader national or pan-African accomplishment.

“’On behalf of the Igbos.’ I’m sorry, that was so unnecessary. It didn’t need that type of narrative. It’s an award won by an African; for Afrobeats and a Nigerian,” Do2dtun wrote.

The comment fueled a debate on social media, with some users agreeing with Do2dtun and criticizing Whitemoney for what they viewed as a divisive statement. Others, however, defended Whitemoney, interpreting his comment as a show of Igbo pride and a tribute to Flavour’s cultural roots.

In a follow-up post, Do2dtun added:

“I see a problem with this because it just pushes the narrative of people who believe they are the minority when they are not. You are a Nigerian at the end of the day—and a powerful one. Also, the category is a genre that represents us all.”

Mixed Reactions Online

The controversy quickly trended online, prompting a wide range of responses:

  • “It’s a pride for the Igbo people. He was simply acknowledging their contribution to Afrobeats.”
  • “Whitemoney head no correct. It was an unnecessary remark.”
  • “People like that are bigots. Always finding a way to divide. He’ll be addressed as Nigerian outside the country, not Igbo.”
  • “Who even sent him to collect the award on Flavour’s behalf? It didn’t look like Flavour asked him.”

Despite the uproar, neither Whitemoney nor Flavour has officially responded to the backlash. Still, the conversation highlights the ongoing sensitivity around ethnic identity in Nigeria’s entertainment space—particularly when it intersects with national pride and cultural celebration.

Do you think Whitemoney’s comment was out of line, or just misunderstood?
