DJ Cuppy Reflects on Privileged Upbringing: “I Thought I Had a Normal Life”

Popular DJ and billionaire heiress Florence Otedola, better known as DJ Cuppy, has opened up about how her understanding of her childhood has evolved over time.

The daughter of business mogul Femi Otedola revealed that growing up, she never realized she was living in luxury. She assumed her lifestyle was normal—only to later recognize how privileged she truly was.

Sharing her reflections on X (formerly Twitter), she wrote:

“Growing up, I didn’t fully realize just how privileged I was. I never had to worry about anything. Thank God I see it now. What felt normal to me is something someone else is praying for. Gratitude changes everything.”

Her post sparked conversations online, with many appreciating her honesty, while others pointed out the stark contrast between her experiences and those struggling with daily needs.

DJ Cuppy isn’t the only Nigerian celebrity who had a late realization of their privileged upbringing. Afrobeats star Davido, son of billionaire Adedeji Adeleke, once shared a similar experience.

In an interview on the Earn Your Leisure podcast, Davido revealed that he didn’t know his father was rich until he was 13 years old. Despite his wealth, his father maintained a humble lifestyle, driving a Honda Accord and keeping a low profile.

“My dad was a billionaire driving a Honda Accord. I didn’t know we had money till I was 13. The turning point came when an explosion destroyed our house, and my mom said we had to move to a new house. I was shocked—we had a new house?

That’s when I realized my dad was rich.”

DJ Cuppy’s and Davido’s stories highlight how perspective shapes our understanding of privilege, and for many born into wealth, it takes time to grasp the full extent of their advantage.
