DJ Big N Reflects on Surviving Robbery and Gunshot in South Africa

Nigerian DJ and music executive, DJ Big N, has opened up about a harrowing experience in South Africa where he survived a robbery and gunshot injury. Sharing his story on Instagram on January 21, 2025, DJ Big N, whose real name is Nonso Temisan Ajufo, recounted the events that unfolded on Sunday, January 12, and how they have profoundly reshaped his perspective on life.

What started as a night out in Johannesburg quickly turned tragic for the DJ.

“On Sunday, January 12th, a night out turned into both the worst and most teachable experience of my life,” he wrote.

After visiting a lounge with friends, DJ Big N decided to head to another club with an acquaintance. On their way, at a traffic light, their car was ambushed by two vehicles carrying six armed men wielding automatic rifles.

The robbers shot him in the leg when he tried to escape. The bullet tore through his leg, leaving him bleeding heavily.

“One of the robbers put a rifle to my head and demanded my watch. I struggled to remove it, along with my chain and other jewelry,” he recounted.

Despite the chaos and injury, DJ Big N managed to return to the car, and the driver rushed him to the nearest hospital.

Doctors described his survival as miraculous, as the bullet narrowly missed major arteries and bones.

“I credit my survival to divine intervention and my mother’s prayers,” he shared.

The ordeal served as a wake-up call, reminding him of life’s fragility and the insignificance of material possessions.

“I lost a lot of valuables that day, but I realized material possessions mean nothing. Life is fragile, and validation is meaningless. God gave me another chance, and I’m committed to living more authentically and appreciating life without unnecessary stress.”

The traumatic experience has left DJ Big N with a renewed sense of gratitude and focus on what truly matters.

“This event restored my focus and reminded me of what truly matters. I am Nonso Temisan Ajufo, also known as Big N, and this is my truth,” he said.

Despite the incident, the DJ expressed his fondness for South Africa and its people.

“I met so many wonderful people in SA and went to so many beautiful places. Like any other country, there are bad eggs that paint the nation badly. South Africa—I visit, I don’t judge.”

Ending on a positive note, DJ Big N assured fans that he is recovering well.

“I stopped using the crutches two days after, and I’m way better now,” he shared.

DJ Big N’s story is a testament to resilience and a reminder to cherish life and the people around us, while letting go of material attachments.
