Davido Faces Backlash Over Economy Comments and Alleged Threats to Cancel Lagos Show.

Davido

Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido claims he has received threats following his recent comments about the Nigerian economy on an American podcast, Big Homies House.

During the interview, Davido warned U.S. citizens against relocating to Africa, particularly Nigeria, citing the country’s economic struggles, which he described as being in “shambles.”

Public Backlash

The remarks sparked widespread criticism from Nigerians, including notable figures like Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri, who publicly rebuked the artist for his comments. Critics argued that as a public figure, Davido should be more mindful of his statements about his home country.

Davido’s Response

In response to the criticism, Davido took to his X handle, stating:

“Yall mad cus we the real ambassadors!”

He suggested that entertainers are often more influential than traditional diplomats in shaping perceptions of Nigeria abroad.

Threats to Lagos Show

The controversy has reportedly escalated, with Davido alleging that there are plans to cancel his scheduled Lagos concert this December as retaliation for his comments. He responded dismissively, writing:

“Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview … loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria.”

Fans React

While some fans expressed disappointment over his comments about the Nigerian economy, others defended his right to free speech, pointing out that his observations may resonate with the experiences of many Nigerians.

As the debate continues, many are waiting to see whether the Lagos show will proceed as planned.
