British-Nigerian artist Darkoo has publicly accused Peter Okoye, famously known as Mr. P of P-Square, of attempting to sabotage her latest single, Focus On Me (All the Sexy Girls in the Club), released on January 2, 2024.
The Allegations
In a series of posts on her X account on January 11, 2025, Darkoo detailed her ordeal, accusing Mr. P of deliberately causing setbacks after she declined his request to be featured on the song.
Darkoo explained that the song, which samples P-Square’s 2009 hit Gimme Dat, was fully cleared with the proper contracts, including a 50% royalty split with the iconic duo. Despite this, Mr. P allegedly took down the music video for six days, claiming it was an act of retaliation for not being included in the single.
In her posts, Darkoo stated:
“I had all the necessary clearance for the sample… They are receiving 50%… rightfully so. Yet, Mr. Peter wanted to be featured on the song, even created his own new verse for it.”
She further alleged that Mr. P discouraged her from working with his brothers, Paul Okoye (Rudeboy) and Jude Okoye, who she praised for their support during the clearance process.
A Dispute Over Creative Control
Darkoo claimed that Mr. P’s actions stemmed from personal dissatisfaction, not contractual disputes:
“Taking my video down wasn’t about copyright or contracts… It was because he didn’t get what he wanted (to be featured)… He told my team I ‘disrespected him.’”
The singer expressed her heartbreak over the situation, emphasizing her admiration for Mr. P as one of the industry’s legends:
“It’s heartbreaking because I grew up admiring him, and to see someone I once looked up to actively try to hurt me and block my success is incredibly painful.”
Moving Forward
Darkoo confirmed that her music video is now back on YouTube and thanked fans for their continued support. She expressed hope to move past the controversy as she focuses on delivering more music in 2025.
Her single has been lauded for its nostalgic appeal and infectious energy, with fans praising her creativity in blending modern vibes with classic Afrobeats sounds.
Silence from Mr. P
As of now, Mr. P has not responded to Darkoo’s allegations. The musician has been no stranger to controversy, including his public disputes with his brothers, Paul and Jude Okoye, which have made headlines over the years.
This unfolding drama sheds light on the challenges young artists face when navigating the complexities of the music industry, especially when working with established icons.
