Controversial Nigerian media personality Darlington Okoye, better known as Speed Darlington, has been released on bail after spending several days in police custody. He was arrested last Friday in Lagos and transferred to Abuja, following a formal complaint by popular singer Burna Boy.
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed Darlington’s release on Tuesday, after meeting his bail conditions. According to Adeyanju, Burna Boy accused Darlington of defamation and cyberstalking. The arrest stemmed from a viral video where Darlington questioned Burna Boy’s Grammy win for Twice As Tall, while insinuating connections with embattled U.S. rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who faces serious allegations.
In a statement, Adeyanju thanked the legal team and Nigerians for their support in securing Darlington’s release:
“Special appreciation to #YeleSowore, super reliable senior lawyer #stanalieke, and to all Nigerians for raising their voice for Speed Darlington. Must also appreciate Prof Sanusi and his team at IRT for their professionalism today.”
The police’s quick response and professionalism were also commended by Adeyanju.
