Augustine Eguavoen has officially stepped down as the interim coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles after just two games. The former coach made the announcement on Tuesday, shortly after the team’s goalless draw against Rwanda in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Speaking to OwnGoalNigeria at the Kigali Airport, Eguavoen explained that his role was to manage the Super Eagles for their matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda. Reflecting on his brief stint, Eguavoen expressed his gratitude and pride in the team’s performance.
“I was given the mandate to handle two games, and I am very pleased with the boys,” Eguavoen said. “I want to thank the NFF leadership and all the players for their discipline and hard work.”
Although there has been speculation about him continuing to lead the team for their next match against Libya, Eguavoen stated that nothing has been confirmed. However, he hinted at his willingness to support the new coach, offering inside knowledge to help Nigeria in future games.
“I want to remain close to the team and share insights to help us overcome Libya. No team is easy to beat anymore, but with the spirit these boys have shown, the future looks very bright,” he added.
During his short time in charge, Eguavoen led Nigeria to a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic last Saturday before the team’s 0-0 draw with Rwanda on Tuesday.
This development leaves questions about who will take over the reins as Nigeria continues its journey in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
