May D Reflects on Career Heights, Claims He Was Bigger Than Wizkid and Davido

Nigerian singer May D has taken a nostalgic trip back to the height of his career, where he claims he once surpassed industry heavyweights like Wizkid and Davido in popularity.

Revisiting the Peak

During a recent appearance on the Honest Bunch Podcast, May D recalled his meteoric rise in 2011 with the release of his hit single Soundtrack. He confidently stated that the track was bigger than Wizkid’s breakout hit Holla At Your Boy, which was among the top songs of that year.

“Back then, it was Wiz, David, and I. I even was bigger,” May D said, reflecting on the trio’s early dominance in the Nigerian music scene.

Relationship with Davido

May D also recounted his early relationship with Davido, revealing that he once tried to house the singer when Davido faced resistance from his father over pursuing music. However, the plan didn’t work out due to May D’s living situation at the time, as he was residing in the boys’ quarters of P-Square’s mansion.

Life with P-Square

May D’s journey with the legendary duo P-Square began in 2008, leading to collaborations on iconic tracks like Chop My Money and Do As I Do featuring Tiwa Savage. While their professional relationship was fruitful, May D shared that P-Square didn’t attempt to sign him until 2011, following the success of Chop My Money.

He revealed that efforts to sign him to Square Records fell apart after he sought clarification on issues such as compensation for his contributions to their songs and matters concerning his accommodation. The disagreement ultimately led to him leaving the P-Square mansion.

In a previous post on X (formerly Twitter), May D claimed he would have been bigger than Wizkid if not for his fallout with P-Square. During the podcast, he clarified that this comment was made in response to bullying from Wizkid’s fans.

Building His Own Legacy

After parting ways with P-Square, May D went on to establish his own label, Confam Records, where he continued to release hits like Ile Ijo and Gat Me High. These tracks cemented his place in the hearts of fans, even as the industry evolved.

Despite the challenges he faced, May D speaks fondly of P-Square, describing them as “amazing people.”

Looking Ahead

As he looks to the future, May D shared plans to release new music in 2025, signaling a comeback that fans can look forward to.
