Tyla’s Debut Album Gets a Pop Grammy Upgrade—And She’s Loving It!

South African sensation Tyla is making waves once again! Her self-titled debut album has been bumped from the R&B category to the highly competitive Pop category for the upcoming Grammy Awards. Originally submitted for Best R&B Album, the Recording Academy’s R&B screening committee decided to reclassify the project, placing it in the Best Pop Vocal Album category.

A Groundbreaking Moment for African Artists

If Tyla earns a nomination in the Pop category, she would be the first African artist to ever compete in this Grammy segment. That’s no small feat, especially considering she’ll be up against heavyweights like Taylor Swift (The Tortured Poets Department), Ariana Grande (Eternal Sunshine), Billie Eilish (Hit Me Hard and Soft), Chappell Roan (The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess), and Sabrina Carpenter (Short N’ Sweet).

Tyla’s Reaction: “I Make It All!”

Tyla’s excitement was palpable when the news broke. She took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to celebrate, writing, “I make it all,” embracing the genre shift with open arms. Her versatility as an artist clearly shines through, and this move further cements her place in the global pop scene.

A Grammy Winner Already

Earlier this year, Tyla already made history by snagging the first-ever Grammy for Best African Music Performance with her hit single Water. With her debut album now eyeing Grammy gold in the Pop category, it’s safe to say Tyla is on a fast track to superstardom.
