Wizkid Explains Why He Rejected Puma Deal, Leading to Davido’s Endorsement

Grammy-winning artist Wizkid recently opened up about turning down a lucrative deal with global sportswear brand Puma, which ultimately led the company to approach fellow Nigerian superstar Davido instead. In a heated online exchange, Wizkid explained that he declined Puma’s offer due to what he described as an insufficient financial package.

Wizkid shared this revelation in response to a fan on X (formerly Twitter) who criticized him for making negative comments about Davido, who is currently collaborating with Puma on a new fashion collection. According to Wizkid, Puma’s budget might have been suitable for Davido but was far below his own expectations.

In his words, Wizkid said, “I turned down Puma because they could no longer afford to pay me what I wanted. I’m way bigger than every artist you just mentioned. Not jealous, love them all. Puma is a big brand, but the budget they had for Africa wasn’t for me. It was cool for your client though!”

This sparked a series of sharp remarks from Wizkid aimed at Davido, where he criticized his fashion sense, musical ability, and wealth. Wizkid implied that Davido’s public image is inflated and suggested that his wealth is inherited rather than earned. He also made harsh comments about Davido’s entourage, accusing him of using his money to surround himself with loyal followers who depend on him financially.

Wizkid went on to dismiss Davido’s self-proclaimed title of “001” as Nigeria’s top artist, saying that it only holds significance within Davido’s inner circle but not in the broader music industry. The comments have reignited rumors of a rivalry between the two Afrobeats giants, stirring up more debate among fans online.

This latest exchange between Wizkid and Davido highlights the competitive nature of Nigeria’s music industry and the high stakes involved in major endorsement deals with global brands like Puma.
