Wizkid’s Iconic Single ‘Ojuelegba’ Turns 10: A Decade of Influence and Legacy

Wizkid's iconic single 'Ojuelegba' clocks 10

On September 17, 2014, Wizkid dropped his sophomore album ‘Ayo’, which featured several hits, including the now-legendary track ‘Ojuelegba’. Produced by Legendury Beatz, the mid-tempo single took listeners on a journey through Wizkid’s rise from the streets of Ojuelegba, Lagos, to stardom.

With its message of hope, perseverance, and gratitude, ‘Ojuelegba’ resonated deeply with fans. The song, delivered in a blend of Pidgin English and Yoruba, quickly became an anthem for anyone aspiring to overcome obstacles. Its infectious melody and heartfelt lyrics made it a standout not just in Nigeria, but globally.

The music video, directed by acclaimed cinematographer Clarence Peters, further amplified the song’s appeal. It captured Wizkid riding in the iconic Lagos yellow buses through the streets of Ojuelegba, showcasing the landmarks of the area that shaped his early years.

‘Ojuelegba’ didn’t just captivate Nigerian audiences; it broke through internationally. British-Nigerian rapper Skepta and Canadian superstar Drake were so impressed that they jumped on an unofficial remix, further boosting its global recognition. This momentum helped pave the way for Wizkid’s future collaborations, including his feature on Drake’s ‘One Dance’ in 2016, which became a worldwide smash and opened the door for Afrobeats on the global stage.

Ten years later, ‘Ojuelegba’ remains a classic, its impact still felt across the Nigerian and global music landscapes. Fans have taken to social media to celebrate the song’s 10th anniversary, reflecting on its importance in shaping Wizkid’s career and Afrobeats as a whole. Streaming platform Spotify also joined in, sharing a clip that honored the song, which many now consider a national anthem in Nigeria.

A decade on, ‘Ojuelegba’ continues to inspire, symbolizing the unbreakable spirit of those striving for success against all odds.
