Governor Obaseki Honors Rema with Naming of Edo Arena

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced that the state’s new 6,000-capacity arena will be named in honor of Afrobeats sensation, Rema. The announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony of the project in Benin City, where Rema was present to lay the first block.

The arena, set to be called “Rema’s Dome,” is situated at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road. Governor Obaseki shared his excitement about the project, noting that the arena will serve as a hub for various events, from concerts to national conferences, and is expected to draw more visitors to the state.

“It was a pleasure to have our global music icon @heisrema join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City,” Governor Obaseki stated in a social media post following the ceremony.

The governor emphasized that the arena’s development would not only celebrate Rema’s contributions to music but also promote Edo State’s rich culture and provide employment opportunities for the youth.

Rema, born Divine Ikubor, is a native of Benin City and has consistently highlighted the heritage of the ancient Benin empire in his music. His recent hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, serves as a tribute to his hometown.
