Flavour, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated musicians, recently opened up about his early days in the industry during an interview on the “In My Opinion” podcast.
Flavour, whose career now spans nearly two decades, shared how he started out as a young producer, charging just ₦5,000 per beat. He recounted his first professional gig playing piano for rapper Nigga Raw (now Mr. Raw), which marked the beginning of his musical journey.
Determined to master the craft, Flavour approached Nigga Raw’s producer for lessons, paying ₦1,000 weekly to learn music production. Once he gained confidence in his skills, he began producing tracks and charging local artists ₦5,000 per beat.
He also spoke about how tagging along with Nigga Raw to shows and recording a successful chorus for one of Raw’s tracks gave him his first taste of success. Flavour credits Nigga Raw with teaching him what it means to be an artist and opening his eyes to the realities of the music industry.
Flavour also shared his internal debate about whether to pursue R&B or Highlife music. Ultimately, he chose Highlife Fusion, believing it offered more potential for success.
In the interview, Flavour also recalled a pivotal moment when he received a life-changing call from the renowned music marketer, Obaino Music, which led him to leave Enugu for Lagos in search of fame.
