Paris 2024: Rena Wakama Makes History as Best Women’s Basketball Coach

Rena Wakama, the coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been crowned the best coach in the women’s basketball event at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, making history along the way.

Wakama’s achievement is monumental, not just for Nigeria but for the entire African continent. She is the first coach of Nigeria’s national female basketball team to clinch the prestigious Women’s Afrobasket title since the tournament’s inception in 1966. Her leadership didn’t stop there; Wakama also guided D’Tigress to their first-ever quarterfinal appearance in the Olympics—a feat no other African basketball team, male or female, had accomplished before.

Under Wakama’s tactical brilliance, D’Tigress challenged the odds, pushing the formidable USA team to their limits in the quarterfinals. Though the Nigerian side eventually exited the tournament with a 74-88 loss, their performance was nothing short of extraordinary and earned them global respect.

The recognition from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as the best coach at the Paris 2024 Olympics is a well-deserved accolade for Wakama. Her innovative strategies and unyielding dedication to the sport have not only elevated Nigerian basketball but also set a new standard for African sports.

At just 32 years old, Wakama’s journey is far from over. Her success is expected to inspire a new generation of coaches and athletes across Africa, particularly female coaches who have often been sidelined. Wakama’s triumph is not just a personal victory; it’s a milestone for the entire continent, signaling that African talent is ready to take its place on the global stage.

As the dust settles on the Paris Olympics, Rena Wakama’s name will be remembered not just as a coach, but as a trailblazer who redefined the possibilities for Nigerian and African basketball.
