Tems Delays Music Video Release in Support of Nationwide Protests

Tems postpones release of her music video amidst nationwide protest

Nigerian international sensation Tems has announced a delay in the release of her highly anticipated music video for the single ‘Burning.’ This decision comes as a show of solidarity with the ongoing nationwide protests in Nigeria.

Tems, a Grammy-winning artist and one of Nigeria’s leading musical exports, has opted to push back the release amid widespread demonstrations against economic hardship and poor governance. On August 1, 2024, Tems took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her support for the protestors, writing:

“Out of respect for the ongoing protest at home, I have decided to postpone the release of the ‘Burning’ music video. Praying for the safety of those outside at this time. May the voice of the people be heard.”

This gesture of solidarity from Tems follows a wave of support from other artists and celebrities who have also voiced their concerns about governance issues in Nigeria. Notable figures such as Vector, Omah Lay, Adekunle Gold, Spyro, Mr Macaroni, Iyabo Ojo, and Konstance have joined the chorus of voices calling for good governance, with the hashtag #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria trending on social media.

The protests, which began on August 1st, are driven by public discontent over escalating economic challenges and the rising cost of living, exacerbated by recent reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Demonstrators are demanding a reversal of fuel subsidy removals and cuts to government spending.

Tems’ decision to postpone her music video has been met with widespread approval from fans and observers, who commend her for aligning with the struggles of the Nigerian people. While no new release date has been set for the video, which is a track from her debut album Born In The Wild, it is expected to be unveiled after the protests subside.
