Unthinkable Upset: Alexander Zverev Shatters Rafael Nadal’s French Open Reign

Rafael Nadal’s quest for a 15th French Open title ended with a straight-sets defeat to Alexander Zverev.

Rafael Nadal’s illustrious return to the French Open, where he has claimed 14 titles, came to an abrupt end as he fell to German fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the first round.

Known for his dominance on the Roland Garros clay courts, Nadal couldn’t find his rhythm despite the passionate support from the crowd. The 37-year-old Spaniard was overpowered by Zverev, resulting in a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 loss.

With 22 Grand Slam titles to his credit, Nadal had hinted at a possible retirement due to ongoing injury concerns that kept him out of last year’s French Open. While his future in tennis remains uncertain, Nadal acknowledges that this tournament might be his farewell to the French Open.

As he stepped onto Court Philippe Chatrier, a site of many of his career triumphs, Nadal received an enthusiastic welcome from the fans. Despite showing flashes of his legendary skill, he struggled to pose a significant challenge against the composed Zverev.

This defeat is only Nadal’s fourth loss in 116 singles matches at Roland Garros, placing Zverev among the few who have managed to defeat the clay court legend on his home turf.
