Tems’ Manager Under Fire for Condescending Comments Towards Nigerian Fans

Muyiwa Awoniyi

In a shocking turn of events, Tems’ manager, Muyiwa Awoniyi, has come under intense criticism for his recent comments on social media that were perceived as condescending towards Nigerian fans. The backlash began on May 23, 2024, when Awoniyi, also known as Donawon, shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) that has been deemed dismissive and disrespectful to Nigerian music consumers.

In the post, Awoniyi stated, “We are not here to entertain you. You only happened to be entertained.” He then went on to say that with or without their opinions, observers will sit and watch and behold the work of a perfect God. The post was widely seen as a response to the recent criticism Tems faced following her performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which many deemed lackluster.

Awoniyi’s comments were quickly met with outrage and disappointment from Nigerian fans, who felt belittled and disrespected by his words. Many took to social media to express their discontent, calling out Awoniyi for talking down to Nigerian fans. The general consensus was that his comments were arrogant and unappreciative, especially given the significant role Nigerian fans have played in Tems’ success.

Tems’ breakthrough on the global stage can be attributed, in part, to her brilliant contribution to Wizkid’s global hit ‘Essence’. Nigerian fans were instrumental in propelling her to fame, and their support has been unwavering. It’s therefore disheartening to see Awoniyi’s comments, which seem to downplay the importance of Nigerian music consumers to Tems’ career.

Tems is set to release her debut LP, ‘Born In The Wild’, in June 2024, and has already released three singles, including the latest, ‘Love Me Jeje’. The anticipation surrounding her debut album is palpable, and fans are eagerly waiting to see what she has in store. Additionally, Tems has been nominated in two categories for the 2024 BET Awards, a testament to her growing influence in the music industry.
