D’Banj Names His Top 3 Nigerian Artists, Leaves Out Wizkid

Afrobeats veteran D’Banj has sparked conversation in the music world after sharing his current top three Nigerian artists during an appearance on the Adesope Live podcast, and notably, Wizkid was not included.

When asked to name his top three, the Koko Master listed Rema, Davido, and Burna Boy, highlighting what makes each of them stand out in today’s dynamic music scene.

“Shout out to Rema, I like his energy,” D’Banj said. “Then there is Davido, people should learn from the way he carries himself, like he doesn’t have a penny, yet he is so consistent. Burna Boy is too intentional, and his live shows are amazing.”

Rather than mention Wizkid, one of the biggest names in Afrobeats globally, D’Banj focused on appreciating the qualities he admires in Rema, Davido, and Burna Boy, energy, humility, consistency, intentionality, and powerful stage presence.

The comments come shortly after Rema honored D’Banj during his sold out O2 Arena concert in London. On stage, Rema credited D’Banj as a key figure in bringing Afrobeats to the United Kingdom and paving the way for the new generation of artists.

“You were one of the first to bring Afrobeats to the UK,” Rema said. “You and Don Jazzy held it down, you opened that door. If you never existed, I would have never existed. I appreciate you for life.”

With more than twenty years in the industry, D’Banj continues to be a major influence in Afrobeats, both as a trailblazer and a voice of experience. His top three picks reflect not just personal taste, but also the evolution of the genre and its global success.

While some fans may question the absence of Wizkid, the list serves as a reminder of the richness, competition, and variety within Nigerian music today.
