“I Have to Hold Myself Back a Lot” — Falz Opens Up About Resisting Online Trolls

Nigerian rapper, actor, and activist Falz is known for his sharp wit, lyrical prowess, and outspoken nature, but when it comes to online trolls, he says self-control is key.

Appearing on the Dear Ife podcast, Falz got candid about the emotional toll of being in the public eye and how he chooses restraint over retaliation when faced with hateful or ignorant comments online.

“It’s annoying, and I’m not going to lie. There are so many moments I see the comments people make and I’m like, ‘Are you stupid? Or daft?’ But what can I do? I have to hold myself back a lot,” he shared.

Despite his public persona, Falz revealed that he often grapples with the temptation to respond but ultimately convinces himself not to give trolls the satisfaction.

“There are moments when I just stop and tell myself, ‘This person is not worthy of my voice.’ I’ve come close to clapping back many times, but I remind myself, don’t do it.”

According to Falz, that level of restraint comes from a place of maturity, discipline, and support. He credited his management team for helping him stay focused and avoid engaging in negativity.

“Thankfully, I have a great management team. They keep me grounded, and I remind myself it’s not worth it. At the end of the day, I believe the truth always comes to light.”

However, there’s one line he won’t let people cross, defamation. When it comes to false information aimed at damaging his reputation, Falz makes it clear he will not stay silent.

“Legally, I will always respond. If anything affects my reputation and it’s untrue, I will definitely go legal. The case is still in court. I’m not going to do tit for tat with anybody, are they mad?”

With a career built on clever rhymes, activism, and cultural commentary, Falz continues to show that strength doesn’t always lie in the clapback, it often lies in silence, focus, and knowing when to pick your battles.
