Spyro Opens Up About Being Ghosted by Davido & Mayorkun After 2018 Collab

Breakout Nigerian artist Spyro has shared a deeply personal story about a tough phase in his music journey, one that involved being seemingly abandoned by two of the industry’s biggest names after a major collaboration.

In a recent interview with HipTV, the Only Fine Girl singer revisited the highs and crushing lows that followed his 2018 remix of Funke, which featured Afrobeats heavyweights Davido and Mayorkun.

“I had a song back then, and I featured Davido and Mayorkun on it. I thought my life was about to change,” Spyro recalled.

And for a moment, it looked like it would. The remix generated buzz across platforms, giving the impression that Spyro was on the verge of stardom. But soon after the initial wave of attention, everything went quiet.

“The song was everywhere when it dropped, but not long after, everything just went cold,” he said.

What followed was a difficult period for the singer, who described how his attempts to reach out to his collaborators were met with silence.

“I would call, and they wouldn’t pick up anymore. I remember sitting on my staircase sometimes, crying. I had my parents to take care of and so much wasn’t working out.”

While many would have given up, Spyro chose resilience. The disappointment became fuel, and in recent years, he’s turned things around, emerging as a rising force in Afropop with multiple hits and a loyal fan base.

His story is a sobering reminder of the rollercoaster that is the Nigerian music industry, where co-signs don’t always lead to success, and survival often requires far more than talent.

But in the end, Spyro’s message is clear: setbacks don’t define your journey, your bounce back does.
