London Marathon 2024: Gen Z Surge Fuels Record-Breaking Race

The 2024 London Marathon is shaping up to be one for the history books, with organisers anticipating the biggest turnout ever—and it’s all thanks to a remarkable surge in interest from Gen Z.

This Sunday’s event marks the 45th edition of the iconic race, and more than 56,000 participants are expected to hit the streets of London, making it the largest marathon ever staged globally. The impressive figures come off the back of a 43% spike in ballot applications compared to last year, jumping from 570,000 to a staggering 840,000.

But what’s fueling this record-breaking momentum? A seismic shift in lifestyle trends among the younger generation, according to London Marathon CEO Hugh Brasher.

Gen Z: The New Driving Force Behind the Marathon Boom

One of the most striking revelations is the 105% increase in applications from 20- to 29-year-olds. This age group is now the second-largest demographic in the race, reflecting a broader generational shift towards fitness, wellness, and purpose-driven living.

“They drink 40% less alcohol, they don’t work the same 9-to-5 office schedules we used to before Covid,” Brasher noted during a press briefing. “They’re embracing a new lifestyle—and running is a big part of that.”

This trend has organisers looking ahead with optimism as the marathon approaches its 50th anniversary. Brasher believes the younger generation is redefining not just how we work and live, but how we race.

Elite Competition Still on Despite Big Withdrawals

While women’s world record holder Ruth Chepngetich and 2024 champion Peres Jepchirchir have pulled out, the elite lineup remains stacked with talent.

Fans can look forward to Olympic gold medallists like Sifan Hassan and Tamirat Tola, as well as Paralympic champions Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug. Reigning men’s champion Alex Mutiso returns to defend his title, while rising star Jacob Kiplimo—world record holder in the half marathon—will make his full marathon debut in London.

“We believe there will be records set all over the place,” Brasher said with excitement. “From elite athletes to everyday runners, it’s going to be an incredible day.”

Start Times and Route

The action kicks off from Blackheath on Sunday morning, starting with the elite wheelchair races at 8:50am BST, followed by the elite women, elite men, and finally the mass staggered start. The route will follow the traditional scenic course, concluding dramatically on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

More Than a Race—A Cultural Phenomenon

Beyond the medals and mile markers, the London Marathon 2024 is a powerful reflection of a changing world. With Gen Z at the forefront, the event has evolved into more than just a test of endurance—it’s now a celebration of community, commitment, and collective spirit.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a first-time participant, this year’s race promises to be a landmark event in marathon history.
